Johann Christian Friedrich Steudel (born October 25, 1779 in Esslingen am Neckar , † October 24, 1837 in Tübingen ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian .

Life

Johann Christian Friedrich Steudel was born on October 25, 1779 in Esslingen am Neckar as the second of eight children of the senior administrative councilor Johann Samson Steudel (1747–1796) and his wife Regina Katharina Burk (1757–1814). The family counted the reformer Johannes Brenz among their ancestors, his mother was a granddaughter of Johann Albrecht Bengel . Having trained in the pedagogy in his hometown, Steudel switched to the Illustre grammar school in Stuttgart and then studied Protestant theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen from 1797 .

In 1803 Steudel received a position as vicar in Oberesslingen . For Tubingen Stiftsrepetent appointed in 1805, he then went on a half-year educational journey through France and Switzerland . Steudel became a deacon in Cannstatt in 1810 and in Tübingen two years later.

From 1812 Steudel taught at the University of Tübingen, in 1815 he became a part-time associate professor for biblical theology and in 1816 he was appointed to the chair of the philosophical faculty at the University of Tübingen. From 1822 he taught as a full professor for Old Testament introductory science and exegesis , from 1826 for dogmatics and Old Testament theology.

In the rationalism dispute, Steudel was dogmatically on the side of moderate suprarationalism.

Johann Christian Friedrich Steudel's eldest brother was the doctor and botanist Ernst Gottlieb von Steudel (1783–1856).
