Location of Oberesslingen in Esslingen am Neckar

With around 13,000 inhabitants, Oberesslingen is the second largest district of Esslingen am Neckar . It is located in the southeast of the city.

history

Oberesslingen 1685, forest inventory book by Andreas Kieser

Oberesslingen was settled a long time ago. There are finds of a Roman villa in the vicinity of St. Martin's Church. In the 3rd century the Alemanni settled on the site. An early medieval settlement was located on the hill of today's garden city .

The first documentary mention of Oberesslingen comes from 1208. It concerns the will of Queen Maria Irenes , the wife of the Roman-German King Philip of Swabia .

In 1270 the place fell to Württemberg . Therefore, there were always disputes with the free imperial city of Esslingen.

Panorama of part of Oberesslingen, seen from the north

Oberesslingen was incorporated into Esslingen in 1913.

From 1912 to 1956, with interruptions due to the war, the Gartenstadt building area on the eastern edge of Oberesslingen was built.

Between 1889 and around 1921 there was a ferry connection between Oberesslingen and the Sirnauer Wiesen where the Adenauerbrücke was later built. The ferry traffic was provided with the Cimpria (sic!) Manufactured in Esslingen by the Hermann Ulrich company . On April 28, 1918, 21 people drowned in a ferry accident with the overloaded vehicle, including many children and young people. The seven people from Oberesslingen who died in this accident were buried in a communal grave at the Oberesslingen cemetery, which was taken care of by the city.

After the Second World War, several separate building areas were designated. The extended garden city as well as the Lerchenäcker and Weihergebiet building areas received separate centers to provide the local population with food, medical care and services.

The construction area Mittlere Rosselen started in 2006 and in 2010 the last house, the only apartment building in the construction area, will be ready for occupancy.

Denominations

Around 2010 about 32 percent (4200) of the residents of Oberesslingen were Protestant.

politics

The contact person for the issues of the district for the city administration and the municipal council of Esslingen is the citizens' committee Oberesslingen . At the district level, the citizens' committee helps shape community life. He is a member of the working group of citizens 'committees , which serves to exchange experiences and coordinate the individual citizens' committees of the city. The basis for the working method and the structure of the citizens' committee and the working group is the status adopted by the working group on February 21, 1991 . An agreement was reached in 1990 as the basis for cooperation between the citizens' committee, the municipal council and the administration . In June 2000, both the status and the agreement were editorially revised.

The Oberesslingen Citizens' Committee was founded in 1952. In the public citizens 'meeting that the city of Esslingen held in March 2017 in the Oberesslingen secondary school, the current Oberesslingen Citizens' Committee was elected for 3 years.
