Carl Häberlin , from 1901 by Häberlin , (also Karl Haeberlin ; born December 16, 1832 in Oberesslingen , Kingdom of Württemberg , † April 13, 1911 in Stuttgart ), was a German painter and illustrator .

Life

Häberlin received his first training in Stuttgart at the Royal Art School and studied from 1852 to 1856 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Theodor Hildebrandt and Wilhelm von Schadow . Around 1859, Häberlin lived with the painter Arnold Overbeck at Jägerhofstrasse 13 in Düsseldorf. His first pictures were Württemberg recruitment , scene from the peasants' war and scene from the Schleswig-Holstein war . In 1856 he visited the North Frisian islands of Föhr and Amrum in order to carry out studies on site for a painting showing volunteers carrying a wounded Schleswig-Holstein warrior through the dunes.

In 1860 he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to see Karl Theodor von Piloty . It was there that the Swedes ( State Gallery Stuttgart ) excavated the Alpirsbach Monastery , The Women of Schorndorf (Schorndorf City Museum) and the fresco scene from the Sicilian uprising ( Bavarian National Museum ).

After visiting Italy in 1864 , he settled in Stuttgart in 1866, there painted the pictures Tezel , Savonarola , gang of thieves in court and developed a great productivity as an illustrator. From 1868 to 1885 he was professor of genre painting at the Royal Art School in Stuttgart. His pictures are characterized by great liveliness and energetic, characteristic representation.

From 1878 to 1894, Carl von Häberlin worked - interrupted only by the cold winter months - in Constance on a total of 26 large-format murals in the former monastery (hotel since 1874) on the Dominican Island . These depicted scenes from the history of the island, from the pile dwellings in early history to the first hotel guests, and replaced the existing biblical frescoes .

In addition, between 1892 and 1894, Carl von Häberlin decorated Castell Castle in Tägerwilen ( Thurgau , Switzerland ) near Constance with frescoes .

In 1901 he received the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , with which the staff nobility was associated.

In 1905 he painted the facade of the historic Zum Hohen Hafen building in Constance .
