Life

Overbeck came from the Lübeck Overbeck family . He was the second son of Johannes ( Hans ) Overbeck (1788-1832), an older brother of the well-known painter Friedrich Overbeck , and a grandson of Lübeck's mayor Christian Adolph Overbeck . From 1851 to 1854 he was a student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Düsseldorf Academy . From 1855 to 1857 Overbeck went on a trip to Italy, where he is recorded in the annals of Antico Caffè Greco in Rome . The painting Landscape from the Sabbine Mountains came from this time . It is in the collection of the Museum Behnhaus Drägerhaus in Lübeck. At the end of the 1850s he settled in Düsseldorf as a landscape painter, lived in 1859, at the same time as the painter Carl von Häberlin , at Jägerhofstrasse 13 and belonged to the artists' association Malkasten .

Since April 1, 1863, he and his brother Gustav Overbeck (* 1827) owned a photographic establishment Gebr. G. & A. Overbeck in Düsseldorf, initially in Schadowstr. 12 , then at Königsallee 43 , later at Königsallee 88 (artificial light studio “Köst”). Around 1875 the addresses of the Overbeck brothers shared. Arnold Overbeck had Kathinka, geb. Schulz, married in Düsseldorf in May 1875. In November 1876, the photographer Wilhelm Otto received for the company “G. Overbeck “the power of attorney with seat in Schadowstr. 42. Later the “G. Overbeck ”in Schadowstr. 42 taken over by Otto.

Numerous photographs have been preserved in the cabinet format and carte de visite , which were common at the time, and have also found their way into museums. In 1880 Overbeck took part in the trade and art exhibition on the zoo premises with photographs and chromophotographs : “By the way, our exhibition almost only contains portraits. [...] Among the portrait photographers we especially mention Arnold Overbeck. "
