Ernst C. Boots

Ernst Carl Stiefel (born November 27, 1907 in Mannheim ; † September 3, 1997 in Baden-Baden ) was a German-American lawyer of Jewish origin.

Live and act

Ernst C. Stiefel was the son of the religion teacher Karl Stiefel. He studied law in Heidelberg , Berlin and Paris . In 1929 he received his doctorate from Heidelberg University . In 1933 he was admitted to the bar and settled in Mannheim . Shortly afterwards, following the law on admission to the bar, his admission to the bar was to be withdrawn, so he emigrated to Strasbourg . There he worked for a French insurance company and obtained a lawyer license from the Sorbonne in 1934 . In 1938 he went to London, where he was admitted as a Barrister of the Middle Temple at the High Court of Justice . In 1939 he emigrated to the United States . There he first worked as a dishwasher and chauffeur, in 1940 he became an assistant in a law firm.

During the Second World War , Ernst C. Stiefel first worked on the Board of Economic Warfare and analyzed entries from insurance companies for the selection of potential war targets in Germany. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army as an enemy alien and served in the Office of Strategic Services . He was naturalized in the United States in 1944 . After the Second World War, he worked for the Office of Military Government for Germany and helped prepare reparations and compensation for Jewish victims of the Holocaust .

He returned to the United States in 1947, was admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and initially worked for Cleary Gottlieb Friendly & Hamilton. In the 1950s he advised German and American companies on the preparation of investments in the United States and Germany and set up an office in Düsseldorf . From 1971 he worked as Senior Counsel in the law firm of the Coudert brothers in New York .

In addition to his legal work, Ernst C. Stiefel taught comparative law as an associate professor at the New York Law School from 1975 and founded the "Ernst C. Stiefel Professor of Comparative Law". From 1988 to 1996 he organized six "Ernest C. Stiefel Symposia" on problems of international law. He has devoted himself to setting up an archive on German legal emigration to the United States, which is now administered by the Leo Baeck Institute . Together with Frank Mecklenburg, he wrote the book German Jurists in American Exile (1933–1950) on the basis of this material . He was a member of the German-American Lawyers Association.

Ernst C. Stiefel visited Germany for several weeks each year; he died in 1997 during a stay in Baden-Baden.

Ernst C. Stiefel wrote several books and over 160 articles on various fields of law . The comment on motor vehicle insurance he founded in 1931 was later continued with Werner Wussow, later editions were edited by Edgar Hofmann. The 18th edition published by Karl Maier appeared in 2000.
