Of counsel ( Engl. In an advisory capacity ), often short Counsel , is the name for a fee earners in a law firm or a similar company that is called in outside the corporate organization only at certain specific duties as an expert. A person working of counsel is usually an experienced, well-known person who specializes in a certain legal or specialist area and often does the job alongside his main job.

In a large law firm , the term is used for lawyers who are called on outside the hierarchy of partners / partners and employed lawyers (“associates”) for certain mandates - often they are politicians or university teachers, especially those in retirement.

In the US , the term is defined by the American Bar Association .
