The Antico Caffè Greco , or Caffè Greco for short , is a café in Via Condotti near the Spanish Steps that has existed since the mid-18th century . It was one of the last great artist cafés in Rome .

history

The cafe was founded by a Greek, which explains its name. Foreign, often German, painters, poets and other artists have met there since 1760. This was favored by the proximity of the café to the diplomatic missions of France and Spain as well as to numerous hotels. According to a description from 1804, it was then kept in the simple style of a restaurant. The most famous guest is likely to have been Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his stay in Rome. The Austrian painter Ludwig Passini (1832–1903) depicted some artist colleagues such as Wilhelm Wider in his painting Artists in Cafe Greco in Rome from 1856 . The picture is in the Hamburger Kunsthalle . The German writer ETA Hoffmann also set a literary monument to the Caffè Greco in the third and seventh chapters by Princess Brambilla .

In 1953 the Italian Ministry of Culture declared the café a “Monument of Historical and National Interest”.
