Ludwig Johann Passini (born July 9, 1832 in Vienna , † November 6, 1903 in Venice ) was an Austrian painter and engraver .
Life
Ludwig Passini was the son of the copper engraver Johann Nepomuk Passini . After his first artistic lessons from his father, he was able to attend the art academy in his hometown, where he mostly became a student of the painters Joseph von Führich and Leopold Kupelwieser . In 1850 Passini moved to Trieste with his parents . A little later he settled in Venice , where he in the studio of Carl Werner for watercolor painter was trained; later he accompanied Werner on his study trip through Italy.
Between 1853 and 1870 Passini lived in Rome , where he began to delve into genre painting , such as architectural pieces and interiors with figures . to make a name. On November 9, 1864, Ludwig Passini married Anna Warschauer (1841–1866), a daughter of the banker Robert Warschauer (1816–1884) and his wife Marie, born in Berlin . Mendelssohn (1822-1891), who in turn was a daughter of the banker Alexander Mendelssohn . The couple, who lived alternately in Berlin and Rome, had a daughter, Marie Clara Louise Passini (1865–1954), called Mira, who married the lawyer Paul Herrmann in 1888 . Anna Passini died just a year and a half after the wedding. Ludwig Passini settled in Venice for the rest of his life in 1873. Scenes from Venetian folk life can often be found in his later watercolors.
In 1878 Passini was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor , and the following year the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts honored him with the title of "Titular Professor". He was also a member of the art academies of Berlin and Venice.
He was one of the preferred selection of contemporary artists that the “Committee for the Procurement and Evaluation of Stollwerck Pictures” suggested to the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck to commission them with drafts.
The Viennese art historian Ludwig Hevesi judged around the turn of the century: "The watercolorist Ludwig Passini, who mostly lives in Venice [...] quickly grew into the most important genre painter next to Pettenkofen ."
