Weil is a district of Esslingen am Neckar . Weil is located in the Neckar valley below the old town of Esslingen on the opposite left side of the river, approx. 3 km west of the city center.

history

In 1173 a hamlet was mentioned as the property of the St. Blasien monastery in the Black Forest .

In 1230, some women from Esslingen founded a monastic community and adopted the rule of the Dominican Order, which had settled in Esslingen in 1221 . The Bishop Konrad von Konstanz gave permission to build a monastery with a church. In 1236 this permission was given by Pope Gregory IX. approved. In 1245 Pope Innocent IV subordinated the convent to the prior of the Dominican monastery in Esslingen. At the beginning of the 14th century, the hamlet of Dominican convent had around 70 nuns. A sister book , which was written around 1350 and has been handed down in several manuscripts, reports on the gifted life of the members of the convent.

In the middle of the 14th century the monastery was pledged by the emperor to the county of Württemberg . As a result, soldiers from Esslingen and Ulm devastated the monastery in 1377. The people of Esslingen attacked the convent again in 1519 in the last war between Esslingen and Württemberg.

With the Reformation ordinance of Duke Christoph von Württemberg of July 24th, 1556 came the ban on reading Catholic masses. The nuns should be forced to keep an evangelical order. However, since these did not give in, the monastery was allowed to die out. The Duke never let a doctor through. In 1560 there were 18 nuns, in 1571 there were four. The last prioress was Barbara Morlockin. She died on June 19, 1592. After that, the monastery became a ducal estate.

In 1643 most of the buildings burned down. The church was rebuilt and only demolished in 1972.

On September 30, 1817, the Weil domain was declared a royal private stud by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg together with Klein-Hohenheim and Scharnhausen . The area was leased to the family of the Pauline Princess zu Wied in 1921/22. After the end of the stud in 1932, the hamlet of Arabian breeding was continued in the main and state stud Marbach.

Under King Wilhelm II , a racecourse was set up on the grounds of the domain in the valley floor. The races held at the Cannstatter Wasen since 1834 did not generate the desired response. The hamlet racetrack was opened in 1892, the competitions - flat races and obstacle races - took place until the beginning of the First World War . The most important race was the Schwabenpreis, endowed with the then important prize money of 20,000 marks.

Weil became a district of Esslingen am Neckar in 1935.
