Johann Christian Wilhelm Augusti
Johann Christian Wilhelm Augusti (born October 27, 1771 in Eschenbergen , † April 28, 1841 in Koblenz ) was a German Protestant theologian , Christian archaeologist and orientalist .
Life
As the son of pastor Ernst Friedrich Anton Augusti (1738-1827) and grandson of Rabbi Josua Ben Abraham Eschel or Herschel, who later converted to Christianity, Augusti attended the Illustre grammar school in Gotha. From 1790 he studied at the University of Jena . He completed his habilitation in 1798 and was appointed private lecturer at the same university . Since 1800 a. o. Professor of Philosophy , Augusti became o. Professor of Oriental Languages in 1803 . In 1808 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Rinteln . In 1812 he went to the new Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in Breslau as a theology professor , and immediately became its rector in 1812/13 and 1813/14.
In 1819 he moved to the chair of theology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he again worked as rector in 1818/19 and again in 1823/24. In 1828 he was appointed senior consistorial councilor and in 1835 consistorial director . On January 16, 1823, Friedrich Wilhelm III was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class. to Augusti.
His estate was transferred to the Bonn City Archives in 1971 by Paul Augusti, the last direct descendant. There were a total of 40 documents. In 2012, six more letters from Augusti to his wife Ernestine Elisabeth Charlotte, including a solicitor's letter, were purchased.
