Johann Martin Augustin Scholz

Johann Martin Augustin Scholz (born February 8, 1794 in Kapsdorf near Breslau , † October 20, 1852 in Bonn ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Scholz was a student of Johann Leonhard Hug . In 1821 he became professor in Bonn and in 1837 cathedral chapter in Cologne . For his text-critical work on the New Testament , he researched libraries in France, England and Italy and also undertook a trip to the Orient, about which he wrote a travel report. His text-critical work was particularly popular in England, where more conservative theologians taught than in Germany. In retrospect, it turned out that Scholz brought unreliable readings in many places and also gave many manuscripts that he either had not collated or only very superficially. Scholz's edition was therefore not very successful in science.

In addition to his main work, the Novum Testamentum Graece , a Greek text edition of the New Testament, he was also known for his Bible translation , where he continued the work of Dominikus von Brentano and Thaddäus Anton Dereser .
