Thaddäus Anton Dereser (born February 3, 1757 in Fahr , today Volkach , † June 16, 1827 in Breslau ) was a German Catholic theologian . He was a professor of Greek studies , hermeneutics , exegesis , pastoral theology and dogmatics .

Life

Dereser entered the Carmelite order in 1776 and studied philosophy and theology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg . He was ordained a priest in Mainz in 1780 . From 1783 he was professor of Greek and New Testament hermeneutics at the academy (from 1786 university) Bonn. In 1791 Dereser became professor of exegetical theology in Strasbourg . During the French Revolution he refused to take the oath on the Constitution and was therefore sentenced to death; after Robespierre's fall he was released.

In 1799 he became professor of oriental languages, exegesis and pastoral theology in Heidelberg, then in 1807 professor of biblical exegesis and oriental languages ​​at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and in 1810 city pastor in Karlsruhe . From 1811 to 1814 he was the regens of the episcopal seminary in Lucerne . In 1815 he became professor of dogmatics and cathedral chapter at the new Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Breslau . For the year of office 1819/20 he was elected rector . One of his students in Breslau was Anton Frenzel .

Dereser was a Catholic representative of the Enlightenment and interpreted the Bible rationalistically. He translated the Old Testament from Hebrew , thus completing the work of Dominic von Brentano , who had translated the New Testament and the Pentateuch. The Bible translation by Brentano and Dereser was published in 1828-37 in a version revised by Johann Martin Augustin Scholz .
