Xavier Tilliette SJ (born July 23, 1921 in Corbie , Département Somme , † December 10, 2018 in Paris ) was a French philosopher and Catholic theologian .

Life

Xavier Tilliette joined in 1938 the Jesuit order in Laval in 1951, and received by his literary, philosophical and theological studies at the Theological Faculty of Lyon-Fourvière the priesthood . He was a student of Jean Wahl and Vladimir Jankélévitch . He initially taught philosophy at the Jesuit college of Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague ("Franklin") in Paris before he was called to the Jesuit training center in Chantilly.

Tilliette was a professor at the Institut catholique de Paris as well as the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Lateran University as well as the Jesuit private university Center Sèvres in Paris. He also worked as a visiting professor at numerous European and non-European universities.

As a historian of philosophy, he was best known as a Schelling specialist; he also worked on Karl Jaspers , Paul Claudel , Maurice Blondel , Maurice Merleau-Ponty, as well as on phenomenology and German idealism . Tilliette has published around 2000 papers and articles.

He died at the age of 97 in December 2018 in Paris.
