Ernst Gottlieb Bengel , from 1823 by Bengel , (born November 3, 1769 in Zavelstein , † March 23, 1826 in Tübingen ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Ernst Gottlieb Bengel was born as the son of Ernst Bengel and the grandson of Johann Albrecht Bengel . After studying Protestant theology at the University of Tübingen , he became a librarian in 1792 , and from the following year he was a repetitionist and undertook a study trip from 1796 to 1797 that also took him to Göttingen . From 1800 he was a deacon in Marbach am Neckar and in 1805 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Tübingen. In the same year he also became the main preacher . Five years later, in 1810, he became a full professor of church and dogma history . In 1820 Bengel received the title of prelate . Two years later he was appointed provost . From 1815 Ernst Gottlieb Bengel edited the archive for theology and its latest literature . In 1823 he received the Knight's Cross of the Crown Order from King Wilhelm von Württemberg .

In 1826 he suffered a herniated intestine and had to undergo an operation. Although the operation went well, he soon passed away from complications. Bengel was married to Johanna Elisabeth, a daughter of the theologian Karl Friedrich Harttmann ; his son, who was also called Ernst Bengel, was a doctor in Maulbronn .
