Clinton L. Merriam

Clinton Levi Merriam (born March 25, 1824 in Leyden , New York , † February 18, 1900 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clinton Levi Merriam was born in Lewis County about nine years after the end of the British-American War . He attended community schools and the Copenhagen Academy in Copenhagen . Then he went into trading in Utica . In 1847 he moved to New York City , where he worked as an importer. He worked in banking in 1860. He returned to Leyden in 1864 during the Civil War . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1870 congressional election for the 42nd Congress , Merriam was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington DC in the 20th  constituency of New York, where he succeeded Addison H. Laflin on March 4, 1871 . In 1872 he ran for the 43rd Congress in the 21st constituency of New York . After a successful election, he succeeded Ellis H. Roberts on March 4, 1873 . Since he refused to run for re-election in 1874 , he resigned from Congress after March 3, 1875 .

Merriam retired from active business and retired to his Homewood estate in Locust Grove . He died on February 18, 1900 while visiting Washington, DC, and was then buried in Leyden Hill Cemetery in Port Leyden . The zoologist Clinton Hart Merriam was his son.
