Scott Murphy

Matthew Scott Murphy (born January 26, 1970 in Columbia , Missouri ) is an American Democratic Party politician . He was a member of the United States House of Representatives for New York State from 2009 to 2011 .

Family, education and work

Scott Murphy is the son of a teacher and postman . He graduated from David H. Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri in 1988. Magna cum laude , he graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor's degree. He then worked for Bankers Trust for around two years . Further positions in the private sector followed. He was employed by the governors of Missouri Mel Carnahan and Roger B. Wilson as an employee and deputy chief of staff . Murphy works in the venture capital industry, founded three companies including Small World Software , and was with Advantage Capital Partners from 2001 to 2009 and returned to 2012 .

Murphy is a Methodist and lives in Glens Falls with his wife Jennifer and their three children .

Political career

In April 2009, Murphy was elected to the US House of Representatives in an extraordinary by-election for Kirsten Gillibrand, who had moved to the Senate , with 399 votes ahead of Republican Jim Tedisco for New York's 20th congressional district. He was a member of the Agriculture and Armed Forces Committee . Murphy lost his seat in the 2010 election to Republican Chris Gibson and resigned from Congress on January 3, 2011.

Before the 2014 election , Murphy was considering running in New York's 21st Congressional District; his place of residence had become part of this district through the redesign of the constituencies after the United States Census 2010 .
