David Woodcock

David Woodcock (born 1785 in Williamstown , Massachusetts , † September 18, 1835 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 and between 1827 and 1829 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Life

David Woodcock was born in Berkshire County about two years after the American Revolutionary War ended . He attended public schools. Then he studied law and began practicing law after receiving his license. He moved to Ithaca - at that time still part of Seneca County . On November 19, 1808 he was appointed postmaster of Ithaca and in the same year a master at the Court of Chancery . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1814 and 1815 . In April 1817, he was appointed District Attorney for Tompkins County . He also held the post of guardianship and probate judge and Assistant Attorney General of the State in 1817 . He was President of the Cayuga Steamboat Co. in 1819 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1820 congressional elections for the 17th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Jonathan Richmond on March 4, 1821 . After his time in Congress he was President and Trustee of the Village of Ithaca in 1823, 1824 and 1826 . He resumed his practice as a lawyer. In 1826 he was again in the New York State Assembly. He attended the Anti-Masonic Crusade and State Convention in Utica in 1827 .

In the 1826 congressional elections for the 20th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 25th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Charles Humphrey on March 4, 1827 . He suffered a defeat in his re-election in 1828 and left the Congress after March 3, 1829.

Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer. He died on September 18, 1835 in Ithaca and was buried there in the city cemetery.
