The Aviation Training Center of the Air Force (FlgAusbZLw) is a former association of the Air Force and carried out course-related flight training for the Tornado weapon system at the Holloman AFB location .
history
Based on a decision by the defense ministers of the USA and Germany in 1990, the 1st German Air Force Training Squadron USA (DtLwAusbStff USA), which had previously carried out the training for crews of the F-4 Phantom at the George Air Force Base in California, was established in 1992 Holloman AFB relocated in New Mexico.
The Tactical Training Command of the Air Force USA (TaktAusbKdoLw USA), which was responsible for training the crews of the Tornado weapon system in addition to training the phantom crews, began service on January 1, 1996 and was transferred to the Air Force Aviation Training Center (FlgAusbZLw ) renamed. Training flight operations with the Phantom weapon system were discontinued in 2004.
On October 1, 2013, Colonel Ferkinghoff took over command of the FlgAusbZLw from Colonel Armin Havenith, who remained at the Holloman location as deputy commander and head of the US Aviation Training Facility (LtrFlgAusbEinr USA).
As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , the Air Force Aviation Training Center (FlgAusbZLw) was placed under the Air Force Command on July 1, 2015 and took over the remaining tasks of the German Air Force Command USA and Canada, which was decommissioned on September 30, 2013 at Fort Bliss in El Paso (DtLwKdo USA / CAN).
As of September 30, 2015, the last commander was Lieutenant Colonel Stephan Breidenbach.
With the reduction in the Tornado fleet at the time and the associated decrease in the number of flight hours required by the training center, the German Air Force also planned to move Eurofighter Typhoon training from Laage Air Base to Holloman; for this purpose, 24 Eurofighters should be stationed at Holloman AFB.
In March 2015, however, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen decided to continue this training in Germany. As a result, the Tactical Air Force Group in Wittmund was set up again as a squadron on July 1, 2016, and then training in Germany.
As of July 1, 2016, the Aviation Training Center was placed under the Tactical Training Command of the Air Force USA .
In September 2017, flight training in Holloman for the tornado was discontinued and transferred to Tactical Air Force Wing 51 in Jagel. The maintenance for the tornadoes will be used until mid-2018. Then the center is dissolved.
On September 19, 2017, training was officially closed by the Aviation Training Center in a festive roll call.
Order and equipment
The Aviation Training Center of the Air Force had the task of training the German aircraft crews of the Tornado weapon system according to the principles of holistic training. The focus here was on teaching basic flying skills, including basic weapons training, to young pilots and weapons system officers , training future flight instructors and weapons system officers with examination and instructor authorization, as well as weapons instructor training. Furthermore, within the framework of free capacities, further education and training projects of the task forces were supported.
The nominal inventory of the Air Force Aviation Training Center (FlgAusbZLw) included (as of 2014) nine Tornado IDSs and six trainers with double controls.
