Alamogordo is a small town in the US state of New Mexico , about 370 km south of Santa Fe and 430 km south of the Los Alamos Laboratory . The first nuclear weapon, the Trinity bomb, was detonated on the White Sands Missile Range about 100 km away on July 16, 1945 .

At the time of the atomic bomb program, around 4,000 people lived there, but that changed when an air force base for the US Air Force - today's Holloman Air Force Base - was established in which, among other things, soldiers of the German Air Force are stationed. Today more than 35,000 people live in the small town.

Alamogordo is a popular destination; the White Sands National Park and the Three Rivers Petroglyph National Recreation Area at the foot of the Sacramento Mountains are popular tourist magnets in the vicinity of the city. Due to the air force base, there is also the International Space Hall of Fame to visit.

Trivia

Opening of the Atari landfill (2014)

In 1983 the computer game manufacturer Atari had more than 700,000 computer game modules buried in a landfill in the city , such as the commercial flop ET the Extra-Terrestrial . This event, known as the Atari Video Game Burial , became a symbol of the video game crash that began in the same year , the collapse of the North American computer game market. However, contradicting reports later led parts of the public to believe that this was a modern legend . In April 2014, a team of documentary filmmakers, with the support of Microsoft and with the approval of the city, carried out an excavation that confirmed the accuracy of the information. Around 1300 game modules were recovered, some of which were given to the New Mexico Museum of Space History for exhibition. Approx. 800 pieces are to be auctioned, the rest donated to museums or kept as souvenirs. Considerations are currently underway on the use of the area for tourism.

Filming for parts of the Transformers films took place both in and around Alamogordo and at Holloman Air Force Base .
