Hamilton Ward senior (born July 3, 1829 in Salisbury , New York , † December 28, 1898 in Belmont , New York) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hamilton Ward Sr. attended community schools and was privately tutored. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1851, he began practicing in Phillipsville (now Belmont). Between 1856 and 1859 and between 1862 and 1865 he was a district attorney in Allegany County . In 1862, Governor Edwin D. Morgan appointed him Commissioner for Recruiting and Equipping Troops for the Civil War .

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1864 for the 39th Congress Ward was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Robert B. Van Valkenburgh on March 4, 1865 . He was re-elected twice in a row. Since he on a run again in 1870 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1871 Congress of. In the 40th Congress he chaired the Committee on Revolutionary Claims .

Ward attended almost all of the New York Conventions between 1858 and 1890 as a delegate. He was Attorney General of New York in 1880 and 1881 . In 1890 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly . In 1891 he was appointed judge at the New York Supreme Court . He was later elected to the office. He wore it in Belmont until his death on December 28, 1898. His body was then interred in Forest Hill Cemetery .
