George O. Rathbun

George Oscar Rathbun (born October 16, 1802 in Scipioville near Auburn , New York , † January 5, 1870 in Auburn, New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1843 and 1847 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Oscar Rathbun attended the schools in Auburn and Hamilton College . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Auburn. He was in the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1842 Rathbun was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 25th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Maynard on March 4, 1843 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1847 Congress of. During his time in Congress he chaired the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions (48th Congress) and the Committee on the Judiciary ( 49th Congress ). After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. He died in Auburn on January 5, 1870 and was then buried in Fort Hill Cemetery .
