William Babcock

William Babcock (born 1785 in Hinsdale , New Hampshire , † October 20, 1838 in Penn Yan , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1831 and 1833 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Babcock was born in Cheshire County about two years after the War of Independence ended . In 1813 he moved to Penn Yan, where he did commercial business. After the formation of Yates County , he was appointed first county treasurer by the governor . Politically, he belonged to the Anti-Masonic Party . In the 1830 congressional elections for the 22nd Congress , Babcock was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Jehiel H. Halsey and Robert S. Rose on March 4, 1831 who previously represented the 26th District of New York in the US House of Representatives. He retired from the after March 3, 1833 Congress of.

After his congress time, he went back to commercial business, but also worked as a hotel owner. He died on October 20, 1838 in Penn Yan. His body was buried in City Hill Cemetery in Torrey Township near Penn Yan.
