James J. Belden

James Jerome Belden (born September 30, 1825 in Fabius , New York , † January 1, 1904 in Syracuse , New York) was an American politician . From 1887 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Belden attended community schools. He then worked in a business in Jefferson County , where he trained as an accountant. He then settled in Syracuse as an accountant and went into banking. He later worked in construction. He worked on many railroad and public construction projects. He was also president of the company that issued the Syracuse Post , and mayor of Syracuse in 1877 and 1878.

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . He was elected to the 50th Congress in a by-election in the 25th  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Frank Hiscock . He took his seat in the US House of Representatives on November 8, 1887. In the congressional elections of 1888 he was elected to the 51st Congress . He was re-elected there again. In 1892 he ran in the 27th constituency of New York for the 53rd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Sereno E. Payne on March 4, 1893 . Since he refused to run again in 1894 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1895 . In the congressional elections of 1896 he was elected to the 55th Congress , where he succeeded Theodore L. Poole on March 4, 1897 . Since he refused to run again in 1898 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1899.

He died on January 1, 1904 in Syracuse and was then buried in Oakwood Cemetery .
