William A. Sackett

William Augustus Sackett (born November 18, 1811 in Aurelius , New York , † September 6, 1895 in Saratoga Springs , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Augustus Sackett was born in Cayuga County about seven months before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended private schools and the Aurora Academy . In 1831 he moved to Seneca Falls in Seneca County . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1834, he began practicing in Seneca Falls.

Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional elections of 1848 for the 31st Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Esbon Blackmar on March 4, 1849 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1853 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in Seneca Falls. In 1857 he moved to Saratoga Springs. Sackett was registered in bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy Act of 1867. He died on September 6, 1895 in Saratoga Springs. His body was then interred in Greenridge Cemetery .
