Andrew Oliver (politician, 1815)

Andrew Oliver (born January 16, 1815 in Springfield , New York , † March 6, 1889 in Penn Yan , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1853 and 1857 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andrew Oliver was born in Otsego County during the British-American War . In 1835 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1838, he began practicing in Penn Yan, Yates County . Between 1843 and 1847 he was a judge at the Court of Common Pleas and in 1846 a judge at the Guardianship and Probate Court and District Court. The final years of his judge's tenure were overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1852 for the 33rd Congress , Oliver was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry S. Walbridge on March 4, 1853 . He was re-elected once. In his renewed re-election bid in 1856 , he was defeated and withdrew from the after March 3, 1857 Congress of. At that point he was running for the American Party . During his last term in office, he chaired the Committee on Invalid Pensions ( 34th Congress ).

After his time at the Congress he devoted himself to agricultural work, but also practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1872 and 1877 he worked again as a local judge as well as guardianship and probate judge. He died on March 6, 1889 in Penn Yan and was then buried in Lake View Cemetery .
