James W. Husted (politician, 1870)

James William Husted (born March 16, 1870 in Peekskill , New York , † January 2, 1925 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1915 and 1923 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James William Husted was born in Westchester County about five years after the end of the Civil War . He attended private schools, the Peekskill Military Academy, and Cutler's School in New York City. In 1888 he graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover ( Massachusetts ), 1892 at the Yale University and in 1894 at the New York Law School . After receiving his license to practice bar in 1894, he began practicing in Peekskill. Between 1895 and 1897 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He moved to White Plains in 1897 , where he continued to practice as a lawyer. In 1902 he returned to Peekskill. He continued there as a lawyer. He then served as President of the Village of Peekskill in 1903 and 1904. Between 1909 and 1920 he was a member and treasurer of the Board of Park Commissioners .

Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In 1912 he ran unsuccessfully for the 63rd Congress . In the 1914 congressional elections for the 64th Congress , Husted was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 25th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Benjamin I. Taylor on March 4, 1915 . He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he decided not to run for re-election in 1922 , he resigned from Congress after March 3, 1923 .

After his time in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in Peekskill. He also went into banking and was President of Peekskill Bank . He died on January 2, 1925 in New York City. His body was cremated and the ashes were then buried in Hillside Cemetery in Peekskill.
