Newton W. Nutting

Newton Wright Nutting (born October 22, 1840 in West Monroe , New York , † October 15, 1889 in Oswego , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1883 and 1885 and between 1887 and 1889 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Newton Wright Nutting was born in Oswego County about six years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He pursued an academic career. Nutting studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Oswego. He served on the Oswego County School Board from January 1, 1864 to January 1, 1867. On January 1, 1869, he became a district attorney in Oswego County - a post he held until January 1, 1872. Then he was from January 1, 1878 until his resignation on March 4, 1883 district judge in Oswego County. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1882 for the 48th Congress Nutting was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Joseph Mason on March 4, 1883 . He then resigned from Congress on March 3, 1885 . After his time at the congress, he went back to his work as a lawyer in Oswego. In 1886 he ran in the 27th constituency of New York for the 50th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Sereno E. Payne on March 4, 1887 . He was re-elected once, but died before the end of his term on October 15, 1889. His body was then interred in Riverside Cemetery .
