Joseph Reynolds

Joseph Reynolds (born September 14, 1785 in Easton , New York , † September 24, 1864 in Cortland , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1835 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Reynolds was born in Washington County about two years after the War of Independence ended . He completed his academic studies. In 1809 he moved to Virgil . There he pursued agricultural activities. During the British-American War he set up a rifle company . He rose from major to brigadier general . Between 1815 and 1837 he worked as a justice of the peace. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1818 . Between 1821 and 1839 he was a judge in Cortland County . He became a supervisor in the town of Cortlandville in 1825 - a post he held until 1835. Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the 1834 congressional elections for the 24th Congress , Reynolds was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Samuel G. Hathaway and Nicoll Halsey on March 4, 1835 , who previously together represented the 22nd district in the US House of Representatives. He retired from the after 3 March 1837 Congress of.

In 1864 he was the first President of the Village of Cortland. He died there during the Civil War and was then buried in the Cortland Rural Cemetery .
