Dennis McCarthy (politician)
Dennis McCarthy (born March 19, 1814 in Salina , Onondaga County , New York , † February 14, 1886 in Syracuse , Onondaga County, New York) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).
Career
Dennis McCarthy had an academic career. He attended the Valley Academy in Salina. Then he went about the extraction of salt. McCarthy also had a political career. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1846 . Then in 1853 he was mayor of Syracuse. McCarthy was elected to the 40th US Congress and re - elected to the subsequent 41st US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1867 to March 3, 1871. In his candidacy for the 42nd US Congress in 1870 , however, he suffered a defeat. Then he went back to his previous business. McCarthy was a member of the New York Senate between 1876 and 1885 . During this time he held the post of President pro Tempore in 1885 . He was Lieutenant Governor of New York from January 6, 1885 to January 1, 1886 . McCarthy died in Syracuse in 1886, where he was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery .
