Maurice Dunlea Hinchey (born October 27, 1938 in New York City , New York - † November 22, 2017 in Saugerties , New York) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1993 to 2013 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives for New York State .

biography

Hinchey was born in New York City. He grew up in Saugerties and graduated from Saugerties High School . He then served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1959 . He then received his Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and his Masters in 1970 , both from the State University of New York at New Paltz . From 1974 until his election to the US Congress, he represented the 101st district of the state in the New York State Assembly , after he had run unsuccessfully in 1972.

From 1993 onwards, Hinchey represented his state in the US House of Representatives, first in the 26th and from 2003 in the 22nd congressional electoral district of New York State. David O'Brien Martin was his predecessor. Hinchey was always able to defend his seat, most recently in 2010 . In 2012 he decided not to run again and resigned from Congress on January 3, 2013. He was a member of the Committee on Appropriations , the Committee on Natural Resources and the Joint Economic Committee . Hinchey was politically considered a progressive who was committed to environmental protection .

Hinchey was of Roman Catholic faith . He had a daughter with his wife, Allison Lee Hinchey.
