John G. Dow
John Goodchild Dow (born May 6, 1905 in New York City , † March 11, 2003 in Suffern , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1969 and between 1971 and 1973 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Goodchild Dow attended public schools in Canton ( Massachusetts ). He made his Bachelor of Arts in 1927 at Harvard College , Cambridge and his Master of Arts in 1937 at Columbia University in New York City. Between 1929 and 1964 he worked as a systems analyst for large companies. He was also director of civil defense at Grand View between 1950 and 1964 . In 1964 he chaired the Zoning Board of Appeals in Grand View. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the New York State Legislature in 1954 and 1956 .
Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1964 congressional elections for the 89th Congress , Dow was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Katharine St. George on January 4, 1965 . He was re-elected once. When he ran again in 1968 he suffered a defeat and then left the Congress on January 3, 1969 . During his time in Congress, he took part in 1968 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . He was a staff assistant in Congress. In 1970 he ran for the 92nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Martin B. McKneally on January 4, 1971 . He suffered a defeat when he ran again in 1972 and then resigned from Congress on January 3, 1973. His candidacy in 1974 was also unsuccessful.
After his time in Congress, he served as an associate director for the New York State Comprehensive Employment Training Act Program from 1976 to 1982 . During this time he founded Americans Against Nuclear War in 1980 . In 1982 he ran unsuccessfully for nomination for the 98th Congress . He died on March 11, 2003 in Suffern.
