William E. Lansing

William Esselstyne Lansing (born December 29, 1821 in Perryville , New York , † July 29, 1883 in Syracuse , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1861 and 1863 and between 1871 and 1875 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Esselstyne Lansing was born in Madison County about six years after the end of the British-American War . He attended community schools. In 1841 he graduated from Cazenovia Seminary . He studied law in Utica . After receiving his license to practice law in 1845, he began practicing in Chittenango . The Mexican-American War broke out about a year later . Between 1850 and 1853 he was a district attorney in Madison County. Then he became president of the Village of Chittenango in 1853 - an office he held until 1855. Between 1855 and 1858 he served as a county clerk . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1860 for the 37th Congress , Lansing was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd constituency of New York , where he succeeded Moses Lindley Lee on March 4, 1861 . Since he on a run again in 1862 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1863 Congress of. His term in office was overshadowed by the civil war. In 1870 he ran for the 42nd Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded John C. Churchill on March 4, 1871 . He was re-elected once. Since he refused to run again in 1874 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1875.

After his time in Congress, he went to Syracuse in 1876 as a lawyer. He died there on July 29, 1883 and was then buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Chittenango.
