Eric Tradd Schneiderman (born December 31, 1954 in New York City ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). From January 2011 until his resignation on May 8, 2018, he was the 65th Attorney General of New York State .

Life

Eric Schneiderman, the son of lawyer Irwin Schneiderman and his wife Abigail (née Heyward), grew up on the Upper West Side .

He studied at Amherst College , a renowned private liberal arts college in Amherst , Massachusetts , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1977 . He then continued his studies at the Law School of Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts, where he received the Juris Doctor in 1982 . From 1982 to 1984 he worked as a law clerk at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York with Judge Richard Owen . In 1983, Schneiderman was admitted to the bar in New York State. Schneiderman worked as a lawyer for the next 15 years, first for Lord Day & Lord, Barrett Smith , where he was most recently a partner, then for Kirkpatrick and Lockhart , where he was also a partner. In addition, he was communications director of the New York State Assembly , the lower house of the state legislature, from 1987 to 1988 .

Active in the Democratic Party, he ran in 1998 in the New York Senate election for the 30th district. Its previous senator, Schneiderman's party colleague Franz S. Leichter , was no longer running for reasons of age. In the Democratic primary , he prevailed against Daniel J. O'Donnell . After Schneiderman was elected to the Senate, he left Kirkpatrick and Lockhart . In the biennial elections until 2008 he was re-elected.

When former Attorney General Andrew Cuomo ran for governor of New York in 2010 , Schneiderman ran for state Attorney General. When choosing on November 2, 2010, he defeated the Republican candidate, the district attorney of Richmond County , Dan Donovan . He took office in early January 2011 and was re-elected in November 2014.

As Attorney General, Schneiderman led investigations against numerous commercial banks. More than four billion dollars in fines were collected during his tenure. Schneiderman also became known through investigations against Trump University and as a prosecutor against the film producer Harvey Weinstein , who is accused of sexual abuse in several cases in the Weinstein scandal .

On May 7, 2018, four women accused him of sexually abusing them. He denied the allegations and resigned as Attorney General the next day. Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered the District Attorney of Manhattans to investigate the allegations . Schneiderman's office will be filled by a general election in November 2018; until then a replacement can be determined by the state legislature. The position was temporarily filled by the state's Solicitor General, Barbara D. Underwood .

Schneiderman is of Jewish faith . He was married from 1990 until his divorce in 1996. The marriage produced a daughter.
