Edward Richard O'Malley (born March 13, 1863 in Medina , New York , † May 30, 1935 in Buffalo , New York) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Edward Richard O'Malley, son of Bridget Whalen and Michael O'Malley, was born in Orleans County during the Civil War . He grew up on the family farm and attended Union School in Medina. He then taught and worked in a quarry to help finance education at Cornell Law School . In 1891 he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws . He was one of the founding members of the Delta Chi student union.

Upon graduation, he moved to Buffalo, New York, where he became a clerk in the law firm of Sheehan , Tabor , Cunneen & Coatworth . He was admitted to the bar in 1892 and then began practicing in Buffalo. In the following years he joined the Republican Party .

O'Malley served in the New York State Assembly for the 2nd District ( Erie County ) in 1901 and 1902 . In the 1908 election he was elected Attorney General of New York. He then held the post from 1909 to 1910. In his re-election in 1910, however, he suffered a defeat against the Democrat Thomas Carmody . In 1914 he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for the post of Attorney General of New York. Republican Egburt E. Woodbury then emerged victorious and later won the elections.

In 1914 he was appointed referee to investigate the Egg Trust in New York City . He was a judge on the New York Supreme Court from 1925 to 1933 . He died in Buffalo in 1935 and was buried there in Pine Hill Cemetery .
