Theodore E. Hancock

Theodore E. Hancock (born May 30, 1847 in Granby , New York , † November 19, 1916 in Syracuse , New York) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Attorney General of New York from 1894 to 1898 .

Career

Theodore E. Hancock, son of Mary Williams and Freeman Hancock, was born in Oswego County during the Mexican-American War . His youth were overshadowed by the civil war. He graduated from Falley Seminary , Fulton, New York in 1867 and from Wesleyan University in 1871 . He then studied law at Columbia Law School , where he did a Bachelor of Laws . He was admitted to the bar in 1873 and then began practicing with the Bangs & North law firm in New York City . A few years later he moved to Syracuse, New York, where he co-founded the Gilbert & Hancock law practice . In 1879 he founded the law firm Hancock, Beach, Peck & Devine in Syracuse. His son Stewart F. Hancock was considered the modern-day founder of the firm . In 1994, his grandson Stewart F. Hancock, Jr. rejoined the firm after serving on the New York Court of Appeals . Theodore E. Hancock held the post of justice of the peace. From 1890 to 1892 he was a district attorney in Onondaga County . He was elected Attorney General of New York in 1893 and re-elected in 1895. He ran for Mayor of Syracuse, New York in 1899.

On June 7, 1882 he married Martha B. Connelly from Wheeling ( West Virginia ). The couple had three children:

  • Stewart F. Hancock (born April 4, 1883) graduated from Wesleyan University in 1905 and from Syracuse University Law School in 1907 . He was admitted to the bar in 1907 and then began practicing with the Hancock, Hogan & Hancock law firm .
  • Clarence E. Hancock (born February 13, 1885) graduated from Wesleyan University in 1906 and from New York Law School in 1908 . He was admitted to the bar in 1908 and then began practicing with the Hancock, Spriggs & Hancock law firm . From 1927 to 1945 he was a congressman for the 35th congressional electoral  district of New York.
  • Martha Hancock attended Syracuse University and Wesleyan College.
