Baron Greenwich
Baron Greenwich is a hereditary British peerage title that has been awarded twice to date. It is named after the London borough of Greenwich .
Awards
The barony was first created in 1767 for Lady Caroline Townshend , wife of Chancellor Charles Townshend and heir to the leading Scottish nobleman John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, 1st Duke of Greenwich . On August 28, 1767, King George III appointed she became Baroness Greenwich , of Greenwich in the County of Kent . The title belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain . Since Caroline Townshend was married in a second marriage and also had children from the first marriage, it was also regulated that only sons from the second marriage were entitled to inheritance. The baroness title was probably a kind of compensation for the fact that, as a woman, she had not been able to inherit the paternal title (including Duke of Greenwich ) when he died. Caroline Townshend died in 1794; since both sons from the second marriage had died childless before her, their title became void.
The barony was awarded for the second time in 1947, this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom : King George VI. appointed Philip Mountbatten on November 20, 1947, the day of his wedding to the heir to the throne, today's Queen Elizabeth II , Duke of Edinburgh , with the subordinate titles Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich , of Greenwich in the County of London . As is customary with members of the royal family, each of the titles refers to a different part of the United Kingdom. The name after the place Greenwich, the historic center of the British Navy, was probably a reference to Philips' career in the Royal Navy. Probable heir to the title ( Heir Apparent ) is Prince Charles , on whose accession to the throne the title would be united with the crown. Should Prince Charles die before his mother, his son William, Duke of Cambridge , would be heir to the title.
