Earl of Merioneth is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after Merionethshire , one of the thirteen traditional counties of Wales .

Award

The title was created on November 20, 1947 for Philip Mountbatten , the designated husband of Princess Elisabeth, who later became Queen Elisabeth II . It was created along with the title of Baron Greenwich as a subordinate title of the simultaneously awarded title Duke of Edinburgh .
