John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll
John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll and 1st Duke of Greenwich KG KT (born October 10, 1680 in Petersham (London) , † October 4, 1743 in Sudbrooke ) was a Scottish nobleman and field marshal .
Life
John Campbell was a son of Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll , and his wife Elizabeth Tollemache. He followed his father in 1703 as Duke of Argyll and head of Clan Campbell .
For the promotion and support of the Act of Union 1707 , he was awarded the titles Earl of Greenwich and Baron Chatham in 1705 . Both titles belonged to the Peerage of England . In the War of the Spanish Succession he fought for the Duke of Marlborough in the British Army, including the Battle of Oudenaarde and the Battle of Malplaquet . During the Jacobite uprising in Scotland 1715–1716, he commanded the Hanoverian armed forces and succeeded in wiping out the Jacobite troops completely without a battle.
In 1710 Campbell was inducted into the Order of the Garter, promoted to General in 1711 , and in 1719 to Duke of Greenwich in the Peerage of Great Britain . In 1736 he was appointed field marshal.

He was married twice, first in 1701 to Mary (1682-1716), daughter of John Browne. In his second marriage in 1717 he married Jane (1683–1767), daughter of Thomas Warburton, with whom he had five daughters:

- Lady Mary Campbell (1727–1811) ⚭ 1747 Edward Coke, Viscount Coke († 1753), son of Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester
Since he had no male offspring, his English and British titles expired on his death. As Duke of Argyll, he was followed by his brother Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll .
