Egburt E. Woodbury
Egburt E. Woodbury (born March 29, 1861 in Cherry Creek , New York , † March 13, 1920 in Jamestown , New York) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).
Career
Egburt E. Woodbury was born in Chautauqua County about two weeks before the civil war that overshadowed his childhood. He attended community schools and the Chamberlain Institute in Randolph, New York. Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1884 and then began practicing in Jamestown, New York. In 1886 he was elected justice of the peace. He sat in the New York State Assembly in 1891, 1892, and 1893 for the 2nd District (Chautauqua County) . From 1901 to 1905 he was the guardianship and probate judge in Chautauqua County. He became State Tax Commissioner in 1906 . He was elected Attorney General of New York in the 1914 election and re-elected in 1916. Woodbury held the post from 1915 until his resignation on April 19, 1917, which happened because of his poor health. His First Deputy Attorney General Merton E. Lewis succeeded him.
