Greene C. Bronson
Greene Carrier Bronson (born November 17, 1789 in Simsbury , Connecticut , † September 3, 1863 in Saratoga , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician .
Career
Greene Carrier Bronson, son of Sarah Merrill (1754-1825) and Oliver Bronson (1746-1815), a music teacher and publisher, was born in Hartford County about six years after the end of the Revolutionary War . Nothing is known about his youth. Around 1802 he moved from Simsbury (Connecticut) to Cazenovia (New York), which was then still in Oneida County , but is now in Madison County . At some point he studied law and was admitted to the bar. From 1819 to 1821 he was the guardianship and probate judge in Oneida County. He sat in the New York State Assembly in 1822 for Oneida Counties and Oswego Counties . From 1829 to 1836 he was Attorney General of New York. He was then Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1836 to 1845 and Chief Justice from 1845 to 1847 . His tenure was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the subsequent Mexican-American War . He was one of the first four judges to be elected to the New York Court of Appeals in a by-election in 1847 . In 1850 he became Chief Judge - a position he held until his resignation in 1851. Bronson was among the founders of the Albany Law School . In 1853 he was appointed Collector of the Port of New York . In the gubernatorial election in 1854 he ran as Barnburner for governor of New York . From 1860 to 1862 he was Corporation Counsel of New York City . His term in office was overshadowed by the civil war. He died in Saratoga (New York) in 1863, but was then buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in the then still independent city of Brooklyn .
