Charles D. Newton

Charles Damon Newton (born May 25, 1861 in Birdsall , New York , † October 30, 1930 in Geneseo , New York) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Charles Damon Newton, son of Polly A. Brundage and Daniel Newton, was born in Allegany County during the civil war that overshadowed his childhood. Nothing is known about his youth. At some point he studied law and was admitted to the bar. On August 10, 1887, he married Nellie E. Durfee. He sat from 1915 to 1918 for the 43rd district in the New York Senate (138 to 141st  New York State Legislature ). He was elected Attorney General of New York in the 1918 election and was re-elected in 1920. He held the post from 1919 to 1922. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Churches and was a Freemason , a member of the Knights Templar , the Shriners and the Odd Fellows .
