Daniel Pratt

Daniel Pratt (* 1806 in Washington County , New York , † July 23, 1884 in Syracuse , New York) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Daniel Pratt grew up on his father's farm. His childhood was overshadowed by the British-American War . From the age of 18 he taught at a district school. He then attended the Cambridge Academy. In 1835 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York. He then taught in Memphis (New York). There he studied law at DD Hills. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and then opened a law practice with Hills in Syracuse, New York. The following years were determined by the economic crisis of 1837 .

He was appointed judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Onondaga County in 1843 - a post he held until July 1847. The final years of his tenure were marked by the Mexican-American War . From 1847 to 1858 he was a judge at the New York Supreme Court and in 1850 and 1858 ex officio judge at the New York Court of Appeals . He then resumed his practice as a lawyer and became a partner of DJ Mitchell and Wilber M. Brown in Syracuse, New York.

From 1874 to 1875 he held the post of Attorney General of New York as a Democrat .

In the Onondaga Historical Association Museum in Syracuse hangs a portrait of his son George Comstock Pratt (1842-1853). His widow Augusta J. Pratt 1885 was co-heiress of Townley English estate, which at that time has a value of 100,000  US dollars had.
