John H. Moffitt

John Henry Moffitt (born January 8, 1843 in Chazy , New York , † August 14, 1926 in Plattsburgh , New York) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Henry Moffitt was born in Clinton County about three years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He attended the district school and the Plattsburgh Academy . During the civil war he fought on the side of the northern states . He signed up on April 27, 1861 as a private in Company C in the 16th  Regiment of the New York Volunteers . He was promoted to corporal . For his services to Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 3, 1891 . On May 18, 1863, he and his regiment were retired. He graduated from Fort Edward Collegiate Institute in 1864 . Between 1866 and 1872 he was Deputy Collector of Customs at Rouses Point . After that he went from 1872 to 1891 the production of iron by charcoal-heated smelting furnace in Moffitsville in Clinton County and Belmont in Allegany County by - then still part of Franklin County . During this time he was elected in 1877 as a supervisor in Saranac , Clinton County. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1886 for the 50th Congress , Moffitt was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Frederick A. Johnson on March 4, 1887 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1890 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1891 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he was a manager at the Syracuse Street Railway Company between 1891 and 1899 . In 1900 he became superintendent in the City Water Department - a post he held until 1902. He was then a cashier at Plattsburgh National Bank between 1902 and 1904 and President of the Plattsburgh National Bank and Trust Company from 1904 until his death . He chaired the Clinton County Republican Committee . In 1912 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago . He died on August 14, 1926 in Plattsburgh and was then buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery . A few years later the world economic crisis broke out.
