Rouses Point is a place in Clinton County of the state of New York in the United States with 2,209 inhabitants at the time of the 2010 census. It is located in the extreme northeast of the state on the west bank of Lake Champlain and borders Canada to the north and Vermont to the east to which it is connected by a bridge to Alburgh .
The community was founded in 1783 when Jacques Rouse , who later gave the place its name , set up a ferry service over the Richelieu River , which rises here from Lake Champlain. From 1816 the first Fort Montgomery was built a little north (accidentally on Canadian territory), a successor building, the ruins of which are now a tourist attraction, was built from 1844 on a nearby sandbank in the river. The fort secured the border with Canada, which was disputed at this point until the Webster-Ashburton Treaty . The fort was planned for a crew of 800 men and 125 guns, but was never occupied. From around 1880 the guns were removed and from 1923 the facility was completely abandoned to decay.
During the rapid development phase of the railway network, Rouses Point was the destination of several railway lines that used it as the starting point for the northernmost crossing over Lake Champlain. So for the railway line Essex Junction - Rouses Point , which was built from 1847, a pontoon bridge over the Richelieu River was built (1851), which was replaced in 1868 by a permanent bridge. Also in 1851, the Canadian Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad was connected to the US railroad network here in Rouses Point. The routes are still in operation today, the Rouses Point station now only consists of a platform used by Amtrak . The former railway buildings are under monument protection.
Especially during the time of Prohibition , Rouses Point's location on the Canadian border was used to smuggle alcohol and other drugs into the USA; for example, the arrest of a drug courier at Rouses Point in 1937 led the authorities to realize that a criminal organization from New York City had been heavily involved in the international drug trade for many years.
Today Rouses Point lives primarily from agriculture and tourism.
