Jonathan Richmond

Jonathan Richmond (born July 31, 1774 in Dartmouth , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † July 28, 1853 in Aurora , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonathan Richmond was born in Bristol County about a year before the American Revolutionary War broke out . He completed his preliminary studies. In 1813 he moved to New York and settled in Aurora, Cayuga County . Richmond became Cayuga County Sheriff in 1808 - a position he held until 1812. Then he held the post of United States Internal Revenue Collector .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1818 congressional elections for the 16th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Daniel Cruger and Oliver C. Comstock on March 4, 1819 . He retired from the after March 3, 1821 Congress of.

Richmond died on July 28, 1853 in Aurora and was buried there in the city cemetery.
