Joseph J. DioGuardi (born September 20, 1940 in the Bronx , New York City ) is an American Republican politician and former member of the House of Representatives of the United States .

Born in New York, Joseph DioGuardi moved to Westchester County with his parents and siblings in 1957 . He is a graduate of Fordham Preparatory School and graduated with honors from Fordham University in 1962 . His parents were Arbëreshë , a member of the Albanian minority in Italy. From 1963 to 1969 he served in the Army Reserve , after which he worked as an auditor in New York until 1984.

From 1985 to 1989 DioGuardi represented the 20th electoral district of New York State in Congress . In 1988 he ran for re-election, but lost to the Democrat Nita Lowey , who has since defended her seat. As a result, DioGuardi applied several times to return to the House of Representatives, but failed in 1992 in the renewed duel with Nita Lowey and in 1994 and 1996 in the primary elections of his party. In 1996 he stood without a chance as a candidate for the Conservative Party and the Right to Life Party .

In November 2010, DioGuardi stood in the Senate election as an opponent of the Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand for the Republicans and lost.

DioGuardi is a human rights activist for the Balkans . Since 1989 he has made 15 visits to the region alone or in the company of high-ranking US politicians. As the founding chairman of the “ Albanian American Civic League ”, he campaigns strongly for the Albanian population in Albania and Kosovo . DioGuardi has been a Knight of the Order of Malta since 1979 . His daughter is the music producer and musician Kara DioGuardi .
