John Sanford

John Sanford (born January 18, 1851 in Amsterdam , New York , † September 26, 1939 in Saratoga , New York) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Stephen Sanford was his father and Congressman John Sanford was his grandfather.

Career

John Sanford was born in Montgomery County about ten years before the civil war broke out . He attended community schools, the Amsterdam Academy and the Poughkeepsie Military Institute . In 1872 he graduated from Yale College . Then he went to carpet making with his father in Amsterdam. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1888 congressional elections for the 51st Congress , Sanford was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded George West on March 4, 1889 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1892 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1893 Congress of. During this time he took part in 1892 as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis .

After his time at Congress, he went back to his previous business activities. Sanford bred racehorses and had his own racing stable. He was also a member of the New York Racing Commission . He died on September 26, 1939 and was then buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Amsterdam.
