James J. Lanzetta

James Joseph Lanzetta (born December 21, 1894 in New York City , † October 27, 1956 ) was an American engineer, officer, lawyer and politician . Between 1933 and 1935 and between 1937 and 1939 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Joseph Lanzetta attended public schools. He graduated from Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1917 and from Fordham University's law school in 1924 . During the First World War he enlisted in the US Army . From February 1918 to July 1919 he served first as a private in Company C of the 302nd Engineers and later as Sergeant First Class in the First Air Service Mechanics Regiment overseas. After leaving the US Army, he worked as an engineer and salesman between 1919 and 1922. In 1922 he became an assistant supervisor in the Department of Markets - a position he held until 1925. After receiving his bar license in 1925, he began practicing in New York City. He served on the New York City Board of Aldermen from January 1932 to March 1933 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1932 congressional elections for the 73rd Congress , Lanzetta was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Fiorello LaGuardia on March 4, 1933 . In 1934 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on January 3, 1935 . Lanzetta ran for the 75th Congress in 1936 . After a successful election, he began his service on January 3, 1937. When he ran for re-election in 1938 , he suffered a defeat and resigned from Congress after January 3, 1939. He ran again unsuccessfully in 1940 for a seat in the 77th Congress .

After his time at Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. On July 2, 1947, he was appointed magistrate of New York City - a position he held until May 26, 1948. He was then a judge in the Domestic Relations Court of New York City. He held this post until his death on October 27, 1956 in New York City. His body was then interred in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx .
