Alexander Hamilton Bailey (born August 14, 1817 in Minisink , New York , † April 20, 1874 in Rome , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alexander Hamilton Bailey was born in Orange County about two and a half years after the end of the British-American War . In 1837 he graduated from Princeton College . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. Between 1840 and 1842 he worked as an examiner ( examiner ) at the Court of Chancery of Greene County . He was a justice of the peace in the town of Catskill for four years . In 1849 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He was a Greene County judge from 1851 to 1855. Then he moved to Rome in Oneida County in 1856 , where he continued to practice as a lawyer. Between 1861 and 1864 he was a member of the New York Senate . His time in the Senate was overshadowed by the civil war . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

He was elected to the 40th Congress in a by-election in the 21st  constituency of New York to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Roscoe Conkling . His term began on November 30, 1867. He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1870 for the 42nd Congress abandoned, he retired from the after March 3, 1871 Congress of.

In 1871 he was elected judge at Oneida County Court - a position he held until his death on April 20, 1874 in Rome. His body was buried in Rome Cemetery .
