43rd United States Congress
The 43rd United States Congress , made up of the House and Senate , was the United States' legislature . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1873 to March 4, 1875. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class III ) were elected in the 1872 congressional elections. This resulted in a majority for the Republican Party in both chambers . The only remaining role for the Democratic Party was in the opposition. The Congress met in the American capital Washington, DC President was the Republican Ulysses S. Grant . The United States then consisted of 37 states. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1870 census .
Important events
- March 4, 1873: Beginning of the legislative period of the 43rd Congress. At the same time, President Grant is inducted into his second term.
- The Indian wars continue throughout the legislative period . The country also suffers from an economic crisis that broke out on September 18, 1873. In addition, the reconstruction time continues.
- May 20, 1874: Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive a sponsorship for blue jeans whose corners of the trouser pockets are reinforced with rivets.
- July 1, 1874: The first public zoo in the United States opens in Philadelphia .
- November 4, 1874: US congressional elections. For the first time since 1860, the Democrats get a majority in the House of Representatives. Republicans retain a majority in the Senate.
